Vergie Allen Clayton

Vergie Allen Clayton, 83, of 302 Reams Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.

Born in Person County, Mrs. Clayton was the daughter of the late George Lemuel and Sallie Wilkerson Allen.

Mrs. Clayton graduated from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. She was the secretary for the superintendent of Roxboro Cotton Mill. She later worked for Clayton Chrysler Plymouth Dodge and Mother Goose Pre-School. Mrs. Clayton was a former member of the Roxboro Women’s Club. She was a devoted wife, mother, and caregiver.

During her stay at the Person Memorial Hospital Extended Care Unit, Mrs. Clayton was known as the cheerleader. She was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a former choir and circle member.

Mrs. Clayton was preceded in death by two brothers, George Lemuel Allen Jr. and Gordon Phillip Allen Sr.

Mrs. Clayton is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas Hill Clayton Sr.; three children, Thomas Hill Clayton Jr. of Roxboro, Sallie Clayton Weinberger of Roxboro and James Allen Clayton and wife, Martha Mc- Donald Clayton of Goldsboro; eight grandchildren, Thomas Reid Clayton, Jenna Grace Clayton, Joseph Charles Weinberger III, James Thomas Weinberger, David Clayton Weinberger, William Allen Weinberger, Margaret Lee Clayton and James Allen Clayton Jr.; five nephews, two nieces and 22 great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, at Long Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bruce Allen. Burial will follow in the Burchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
