James “Gary” Morris

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — James “Gary” Morris went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 at 72 years old.

Born in Roxboro and a graduate of UNC, Gary was a devoted father and husband that raised his family in Sandy Springs.

Gary loved to serve his church and was a friend of the community. Possessing a sincere warmth, Gary never knew a stranger. He touched many lives by counseling and serving friends and church members in times of crisis through the Comfort Ministry.

But his greatest joy was his family whom he loved dearly. Gary had many lifelong friends and spent time golfing, traveling on Harleys, diving and vacationing in Emerald Isle.

He is survived by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Diane Blair Morris; his son, Brent Morris and wife, Hope; and his daughter, Beth Self and husband, Scott.

Gary was known to his seven grandchildren as “Pop” and was an especially loving and nurturing influence in the lives of Wright, Alissa, Anna-Blair, Cullie, McKinley, Amanda and Lance. He is also survived by his mother, Virginia; his brother Danny Morris and wife, Jane; his nieces (Allison, Amanda) and nephew (Kevin).

Services will be on Sunday, Dec. 22 at his church, North Springs United Methodist at 7770 Roswell Rd, Atlanta, GA 30350. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. followed by a memorial and celebration of Gary’s life with a reception afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Springs United Methodist Church or Alpha Team K9 Search & Rescue (http://www.atsar.org).
