Ashton Martin Ashton Martin On March 11, Roxboro Community School (RCS) senior Ashton Martin was awarded the Morehead- Cain Scholarship.

The scholarship is a full ride to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including four full years of tuition, fees, housing, and food, in addition to $2,500 for a laptop and four summers of “summer enrichment” to study abroad, get involved in community service overseas, and for internships.

In order to receive the scholarship, Martin said she had to fill out an application, which determined whether she would be a semifinalist or not. Martin then had two interviews in Chapel Hill with Morehead-Cain alumni and staff that determined if she would be a finalist. Once Martin was a finalist, she had a four-day finals weekend that included two more interviews, which then determined if she would be awarded the scholarship.

Martin is planning to be on a pre-med track with a major in biology.

“I was really worried about how I was going to pay for college without this and now I don’t have to,” said Martin.

She continued, “My first thought was, there’s nothing to worry about anymore.”

Roxboro Community High School Principal Darkarai Bryant said, “Ashton’s achievement is a testament to her hard work, family support and educational preparation. RCS and I are extremely proud of Ashton and expect great things in her future. She has blazed a trail for RCS as our first Morehead Cain recipient and is a shining example for our younger Bulldogs.”

Bryant offered his congratulations and said, “We wish Ashton the best as she goes on to higher education and beyond.”
