Photo by Carly Long The Roxboro Community School (RCS) golf team concluded its 2016 regular season with a third place finish behind Franklin Academy and East Wake Academy.

The conference tournament was played on April 26 at 12 Oaks Country Club in Holly Springs. The regionals are scheduled for May 2 in Clinton.

The Bulldogs are a young team. Members of the 2016 team include Josh Lowery, Max

Dailey, Jared Williammee, Brandon Evans, JJ Shaw, Andrew Jones, Noah Carver, Andrew

Horton, Chance Farmer, Spencer Blalock, Cole Strickland, Bricen Jones, Hunter Stone, and

Carter Hall.

This is the largest roster thus far for a RCS golf team.

Lowery, Daily, Evans and Farmer are returning players. Lowery, a senior, plays in the number one spot and reached the Regionals in his sophomore and junior years.

The Bulldogs are coached by Earl Gurtner and assistant coach Justin Bettendorf.

Roxboro Country Club serves as the home course for the Bulldogs. The team shares the course with Person High School (PHS) and Roxboro Christian Academy (RCA).

This year, away matches were played at Umstead Pines at Willowhaven Golf Course, Wildwood Green Golf Club, Olde Liberty Golf Club, Southwick Golf Course, and Zebulon Country Club. The team did host one non-conference match against Oxford Prep.

Matches are usually played on a Monday. Qualifying occurs on the Thursday prior to the match. Six golfers play in a match. During the regular season, players walk nine holes but must loop 18 holes for the tournament.

The team got to use new Titleist golf bags that were purchased from funds raised at the RCS-PHS golf team tournament last year.

The bags are red, black and white and display the school’s name and bulldog logo.
