Long days on the course paid off as the Roxboro Community School golf team made history. The 2016 Bulldogs were the first team to ever make it to the regionals.

Individual golfers have qualified for the regionals in the past, but never the team.

The NCHSAA Mideast 1A Golf Regional was played on May 2 at Coharie Country Club in Clinton.

Nine teams qualified for the regionals. The top three teams advancing from the regionals were Rosewood, Franklin Academy and Lakewood. One of the goals for next year’s team will be to advance to the second round of the state playoffs.

According to assistant coach Justin Bettendorf, “This year has been very successful. Being my first year as coach, I was not really sure what to expect for this season. But I definitely did not expect the team to finish third in the conference and make regionals as a team.”

Bettendorf added, “I think the 2017 team can be even better than the 2016 team. We have a core group of younger players who are willing to put in some work in the offseason to get better.”

He feels the team needs to improve their consistency and mental toughness over the summer.

The RCS Golf Team, along with the Person High School Golf Team, will be hosting a Fundraiser Tournament at Roxboro Country Club (RCC) on Saturday, May 28.

Lunch will be served at noon and tee-off will be at 1 p.m.

The tournament will consist of four-person teams, Captain’s Choice. Cost is $50 per person ($40 for RCC members). Hole Sponsorships are $50.
