And they took full advantage.

The Bulldogs found the back of the net three times in the opening half and let their defense take care of the rest in their 3-0 victory against in-county rival Person Thursday at home.

RCS improved to 4-1 on the season, with its only loss coming to reigning North Central Athletic Conference champion and 1-A finalist Franklin Academy.

Person has now lost its last four games after opening the season 2-0, but have been playing without leading scorer Abby Mayer. Mayer has been out for the past week after suffering a mild concussion.

The Bulldogs controlled the pace of play for most of the first half and took the lead just under 10 minutes into the game when Mackenzie Oliver’s shot from just outside the box floated over the head of Person keeper Cristina Roberts.

KELLY SNOW | COURIER-TIMES Senior Brianna Henderson gave RCS another goal about 20 minutes later on a free kick from about 30-yards away. Henderson’s goal was set up when Person’s Nayeli Gonzalez collided with RCS forward Brittany Smith on a run down the sideline.

The Bulldogs padded their lead just before the half when Sophie Vanek intercepted a goal kick and passed to Oliver in the middle of the field. She connected with Smith inside the box, and the senior’s shot found the back of the net.

Person had several nice chances in the second half, but were fought off by keeper Carly Grinstead. Grinstead finished with four saves in the shutout win.

Person will be back in action Monday when it travels to Northern Durham. Woods Charter will host RCS Monday.
