By Paige Mangum and Jazmin Ibarra

Person High School civics and economics students participated in Local Government Day on March 20. The students visited local government agencies throughout Person County.

Each of the student groups visited three locations that included the Roxboro City Council, Person County Board of Commissioners, Person County Courthouse, Person County Board of Education, Roxboro Police Department, Roxboro Fire Department, Person County Tax Office, Person County Register of Deeds, Roxboro Emergency Medical Services, Person County Recycling Center, Person County Sheriff ’s Department, Person County Department of Social Services and Person County Health Department.

Sophomore Hannah Benjamin attended the city council meeting and visited the tax and the Register of Deeds offices. Benjamin said it was exciting for her and her classmates to find one of their own birth records while visiting the Register of Deeds office. Benjamin also enjoyed listening to the city council discuss topics that benefit Person County.

Benjamin said, “At the tax office, we learned the importance of our parents paying taxes in order to avoid any tax payment being taken from their paychecks.”
