On Saturday, April 22 from 1 to 3 p.m., the public is invited to a garden kickoff in the Person County Public Library’s backyard for the library new venue for lifelong learning — a community teaching garden. This Earth Day celebrati on will feature music, local food, and fun gardenthemed activities for all ages. A “What’s Growing in Your Garden” storytime for young gardeners will be held at 2 p.m.

The Person County Public Library will hold a workshop titled “Fact or Fiction: Fake News and Media Bias” on Wednesday, April 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Reference librarian Becky Schneider will explore the phenomenon of fake news and teach participants to read the news like a librarian, using techniques to weed out fake and misleading stories in traditional and social media. The Person County Recreation, Arts and Parks Department will host a Doubles Tenis Benefit Tournament for Hospice of Person County on Saturday, April 29 at the Sansbury tennis courts. A partner is not needed to enter since players will be playing each set with a different partner. The entry fee is $10 per person. Registration deadline is Wednesday, April 26. This is not a sanctioned tournament and USTA membership is not required; USTA rules will govern all play. Online registration is available at http://www.personcounty.net. The Humane Society of Granville County is hosting a BARK FOR Life Dog Walk benefitting the American Cancer Society. The event will be held at Granville Athletic Park, 4615 Belltown Road, Oxford on Saturday, April 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. The fee is $20 if you register before the day of the event and $25 on the day of the event. The Halifa x County Virginia heritage and antique machinery festival will be held May 5, 6 and 7 at the Halifax County Fairgrounds, behind the South Boston Speedway, 1188 James D. Hagood Hwy., South Boston, Virginia. Hours are Friday, noon to 9 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.
