Dorthy E. Bartholomew

Feb. 27, 1933 – Aug. 10, 2017

Dorthy E. Bartholomew (nee Davis), age 84,  Dorthy, or Dot, as she was affectionately known, passed away peacefully after a long illness.
A longtime resident of Gloucester County, New Jersey, she is survived by her husband Fred, son Barry Johnson (Lori), daughter Deena Ridge (Mark) and son Robert Carney (Christine);  loving grandmother of Stacie Fusselman (Martin), Dale Johnson, Lori Ann Johnson, Ryan Carney and Cate Carney; dear sister of Tina Tingen (R.B.), the late Jimmy Davis and Mike Davis (Alease).  She is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews.
Born during the great depression in Lillington, Dot was the eldest of C.R. and Ruby Davis’s four children. Nicknamed “Bell Cow” as a child and later “the Director” because of her natural leadership qualities, she blazed an adventurous trail in her nine decades of life.  She was often compared to late actress Elizabeth Taylor, owing to their physical resemblance as well as their shared affinity for getting married.
Dot lived in many places – North Carolina, Florida, New York City and Los Angeles to name a few – held many different jobs and was widely known as a kind, fun-loving, brave, hard-working, generous and outgoing person.  Most notably, from the early 1980s until the late 1990s, she was the manager and co-owner of her son Barry’s bar in Gloucester City, called The Party Hut.
Dot was a voracious reader who averaged reading a few books per month, as well as an avid fan of Elvis, former Presidents JFK and FDR, movies – especially the film Gone With The Wind – and music ranging from Chuck Berry and Fats Domino to Marvin Gaye and Bruce Springsteen.
However, she was the biggest fan of her children and grandchildren, often referring to them as “Rock Star” or “Movie Star” and heaping an embarrassing amount of praise on them, often while taking their picture.
Dot was a unique and fascinating person who packed several lifetimes worth of living in her time here on earth. She could engagingly discuss an incredibly wide range of topics and was at home interacting with people of all ages and backgrounds.
A memorial gathering will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at the Telford Inn, 145 Bridgeton Pike, Mantua, NJ 08051 between 6:30 and 10 p.m. Per her wishes, please join us for some bar food and a drink in her memory.
Memorial donations may be made to Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053; (800) 229-8183.
