Donnell W. Clayton Sr.

Mr. Donnell W. Clayton Sr., age 82, of 6061 Boston Road, Roxboro, departed this life Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 in Duke University Hospital in Durham.
He was a native of Person County and a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. He became the first African-American policeman in Roxboro on July 1, 1963 and retired from the department after 27 and one-half years.
He is survived by his wife, Frankie M. Clayton of the home; one son, Donnell Clayton Jr. of Roxboro; two grandsons, LaVon Clayton of Roxboro and Zachary Clayton of Rocky Mount; four sisters, Gladys Clayton Conway (Willie) of Danville, Virginia, Bonnie Clayton and Kathleen Hill (Bobby), both of Washington, D.C. and Merita Pigford (Solomon) of Fayetteville; three brothers, McLouis Clayton of Raleigh, Theodore Clayton of New York and Melvin Clayton of Roxboro; one sister-in-law, Saundra Wilkerson of Roxboro; and a host of other additional relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, 1851 Cedar Grove Church Road, Roxboro, NC 27574, with the Rev. Dwight Wilkerson providing the eulogy and the Rev. Darryl Howard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation was at the church Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home.
The body will lie in state in the church for one hour prior to the service.
