Vinston Burton Jr.Vinston Burton Jr.Dr. Vinston “Dune” Burton Jr., age 73, departed this life on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017 in Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.
He was a native of Granville County, graduating from Joe Toler High School in 1961 and was a member of Blue Wing Baptist Church.
Dr. Burton earned his undergraduate degree from NCCU, an MS from Michigan State and a PhD from UCLA, returning to NCCU as a professor. He became one of the two black geomorphologists in the United States.
He is survived by two sons, Damon Burton (Ella) of Sugar Hill, Georgia and Jamal Burton (Alonya) of Morrisville; two sisters, Thelma Chapman of Silver Spring, Maryland and Louise Lea of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; five grandsons, Donovan and Evan Burton, both of Sugar Hill, Malik, Rashad and Justin Burton, all of Morrisville; an aunt, Aurelia Burton of Oxford; and a host of other additional relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at Blue Wing Baptist Church, 597 Blue Wing Road, Roxboro, NC 27574 with the Rev. Gregory Jones, pastor, officiating and the Rev. J.E. Wade providing the eulogy. Burial will follow in Blue Wing Memorial Gardens, 575 Blue Wing Road.
Visitation was Friday at the funeral home from 1 to 6 p.m.
The body will lie in state in the church for one hour prior to the service.
