Madison Fuller A cooking club has begun at Roxboro Community School (RCS) for the 2017-2018 school year with the help of Elizabeth Carson, American literature and AP language and composition teacher.

Carson said she wanted to start a cooking club to “teach folks how to cook healthy, inexpensive meals, while having a really, really good time.

“Many students complain they do not have ‘life skills’ when they graduate from high school,” said Carson. “Planning, purchasing, and preparing food is a huge first step.”

Carson previously taught English at The Achievement School in Raleigh, a school for students with diagnosed learning differences. The school needed a person to teach food and nutrition, so Carson turned it into a culinary arts class. The class catered and sold desserts.

“Students who had never experienced success in the classroom found a venue in which they could be wildly successful,” remarked Carson. “That is the magic of cooking. There is something for everyone to do.”

The club’s first project was Irish soda bread, which reportedly turned out great.

Carson said the RCS club will cook anything the students want to learn how to cook, from biscuits to bon-bons. Cooking club members will work their way toward items they can sell to make money to fund the program.

The club aims to contribute to the soup kitchen at the Christian Life Center once a month, and to cook for the community on Bulldogs Care Days.

“I enjoy learning someone else’s cooking perspective and love for cooking,” said Jackson Woody, founding member of the new club. “I am excited for cooking club and hope to see it become a class eventually.”

Currently, the club has between 80 and 100 active members and is open to all high school students.
