Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program Provides Assistance to Eligible Fa milies

The Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program provides a combination of supplemental healthy foods, nutrition and health information, breastfeeding promotion and support in additional to referrals to other health care and community resources.

The WIC Program is available at the Person County Department of Public Health, 355 A South Madison Boulevard — apply for WIC, Monday through Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m.

To be eligible, an individual must:

• be a pregnant woman, a breastfeeding woman who has delivered a baby in the last 12 months, a non-breastfeeding woman who has had a baby in the last six months, an infant, or a child up to the fifth birthday;

• reside in North Carolina and in the health delivery area of the local WIC agency;

• meet the income eligibility scale — the gross annual household income cannot exceed 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. All Medicaid, food stamp and Work First recipients meet the WIC Income Eligibility Criteria);and

• have an identified nutritional risk factor based on height and weight measurements, blood test for low iron, medical history and dietary history.
