RCS will host student-staff basketball games for the first time on Friday, April 13.

The games will be played in the gym.at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. Some of the staff participating in the games are Jason Bell, Darkarai Bryant, Phillip Gillis, Russell Fryczynski, and a few past and present coaches. The games will be coached by Gina Lunsford, Sara Morrow, and Yvonne Pleasant.

High school science teacher Mike Czysz said, “This year’s student-staff game will be one for the history books The staff team is strong and deep, and with the addition of good foulers like me,” he joked, “we can’t lose by too much. I have even been practicing once or twice, and I expect to make it up and down the court at least three times before fainting.”

Czysz added, “My biggest challenge will be to avoid the pizza and snacks before our championship match. Too much of that might slow me down to a crawl.”

High school English and drafting teacher Phillip Gillis said, “In the words of the immortal Ricky Bobby, ‘If you ain’t first, you’re last.’ I’m going to approach this game like I would approach the finals of the state championship,” added Gillis, “something I would know nothing about.”

He went on to say he hope to be matched against one of his drafting students during the game, “and teach him what a ‘thunder block’ really is.”

Gillis quipped, “I’m also excited to see what the over/under is for how many times Czsyz gets up and down the court.”

Although students and teachers may talk a little trash, the event is for fun, and to raise money for the basketball program. If successful, the sports department plans to make it an annual event.
