Bruce Romulus Mooney

TIMBERLAKE — Bruce Romulus Mooney, 87, died Saturday, April 28, 2018.  He was born November 6, 1930 in Person County to the late Earl Mooney and Rosa Ashley Mooney. 

Mr. Mooney graduated from Helena High School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1956 with his Bachelor’s Degree in Education and in 1960 with his Master’s Degree in Theater Arts.  He taught English and history, and was the Drama Coach at Durham High School from 1956-1959, was President of Carolina Dramatic Association from 1958-1959, and received yearbook dedication in 1958.  From 1960-1969 Mr. Mooney taught English and drama at North Shore High School in Glen Head, Long Island, New York. While there he was the drama coach and director of nine summer theater workshops, and founded The Viking Masquers Drama Group. Again, he received yearbook dedication in 1965.  Mr. Mooney moved back to Roxboro and worked at Person High School from 1970-1994 teaching English and drama.  He founded Person Players in 1970, was Citizen of the Year in 1972, President of Carolina Dramatic Association from 174-1975,  North Carolina English Teacher of the Year in 1978, and PHS Teacher of the Year in 1991.  Mr. Mooney served in The Medical Corps of the United States Army for 18 months in Japan as Chaplain’s assistant (1954-1956).  He taught English to Japanese students, directed over 30 special service shows, and directed a joint Christmas concert with the military and Japanese choirs.  Mr. Mooney worked as the director of many choirs including Northgate Presbyterian Church, Ephesus Baptist Church of Durham Co., and Antioch Baptist Church. He also wrote the State of the Arts column for the Courier Times.

Surviving are his two nephews, Gary Hall (Emma), and Dwight M. Hall (Patricia), of Timberlake. Mr. Mooney was preceded in death by four sisters, Annie Lou Hall, Doris Mooney, Zeba Mooney, and an infant child.

Memorials services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the Brooks and White Chapel with the Dr. M. David Chambers officiating.  Visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Brooks and White Funeral Home.
