Thomas Blackwell Sparrow

ROUGEMONT -— Thomas Blackwell Sparrow, 87, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at The Duke Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.  Mr. Sparrow was one of seven children born in Orange County to Ira Sankey Sparrow and Rhoda Alberta Day Sparrow on October 27, 1930. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Nell Sparrow.  Mr. Sparrow is survived by his younger sister, Barbara Sparrow Bassett, his three children Cynthia Sparrow Turberville, Dennis Blackwell Sparrow and Christie Sparrow Meiggs.  Mr. Sparrow was blessed with five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Todd Colie, Jeremy Colie, Leslie Sparrow, Elena Meiggs, Grant Meiggs, Aaron, Elijah, and Gabriel Colie.

In his early years, Mr. Sparrow attended Hope Valley High School were he played basketball and drove the school bus.  After graduation he lived in Raleigh where he was  employed as a book keeper.  He then was employed by Liggett Myers Tobacco Company as a machine operator for a number of years.  While at Liggett he began to see the need for a career that he felt was more beneficial to his family and to citizens in the Durham/Chapel Hill and surrounding area. In 1971 he and his wife started Sparrow Heating and Air Conditioning Company.  Due to health reasons, in 1986, Mr. Sparrow turned the company over to his son who still runs it today.  

An avid golfer, fisherman, and all around outdoorsman, Mr. Sparrow had a zest for life. He believed in hard work and appreciated the results of such. He loved his family and the Lord and served in many positions through the years.  He was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church for many years and was training union director as well as one of those working on construction of the church.  In his later years Mr. Sparrow was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church in Rougemont and served as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years.  

Funeral arrangements will be as follows.  Visitation will be at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 1655 Mr. Harmony Church Road.Rougemont.,  on Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  The funeral service will be at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church at 11 a.m.  with the burial immediately  following in the church cemetery.
