Roxboro man gunned down in Virginia

Zack Long Zack Long A Virginia man is facing a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of his father, a resident of Roxboro.

Zackary Long, 22, allegedly shot his father Christopher “Chris” David Long Friday night with a shotgun multiple times in the hallway of Zack Long’s home, according to witnesses cited in the incident report.

The Pittsylvania County, Virginia Sheriff ’s Office reported officers responded to a call that someone had been shot at 9:31 p.m. in Ringgold.

When they arrived, they found 41-year-old Chris Long injured with witnesses trying to perform medical procedures on him, according to Pittsylvania County Sheriff ’s Captain Corey Webb.

“Rescue was called and he was pronounced dead at the scene,” Webb said. “The suspect was taken into custody that night. He was on scene when officers arrived.”

Zackary Long was charged with first-degree murder and more charges, including use of a firearm in commission of a felony are forthcoming, Webb said.

No other injuries were reported.

The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke to determine the cause and manner of death, the sheriff ’s office reported.

Chris Long was from Martinsville, but has been living in Roxboro for awhile, according to a witness. Chris Long’s address is listed as 8773 Virgilina Road, Roxboro.
