SUBMITED Student members of the Home Educators Association of Roxboro visited the Greensboro Science Center on May 31 to celebrate their hard work and strong finish in the Person County Battle of the Books in March.

This is the second year that the homeschool group has participated in the local book-reading competition, which was hosted and organized by Woodland Elementary School. Students who participate in the competition are required to read 10 books throughout the school year and they are asked questions by a moderator about the books.

HEAR student members, as well as students from several elementary schools, came together to compete in a county-level Battle of Books on March 27 at Southern Middle School.

Because one of the 10 books that the student members read was “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” they were treated to a visit to Wiseman Aquarium, which is located in the science center and includes African penguins, as portrayed in the book. The “Inside Tracks: Aquarium Adventures” tour gives visitors a special, behindthe scenes look into the everyday workings of aquarium life.

The group saw what’s on the menu in the food prep area, watched otters enjoy icy enrichment in their holding spaces and watched the fish from the top of “Shark Reef.” An unexpected treat for the student members was being able to watch as the aquarium staff trained a stingray.

This year’s HEAR Battle of the Books team was organized by April Glenning and consisted of student members Alanabeth Duncan, Addyson Welch, Elliahna Glenning, Graceanne Stinebaugh, Peter Liggitt and Thomas Byerly.
