John W. McKinney, Sr.

DURHAM — John W. McKinney, Sr., of Durham, passed away unexpectedly on July 20, 2018 at the age of 87. Mr. McKinney was born in Westover, West Virginia to George W. and Amy E. McKinney. He graduated from Morgantown High School and attended West Virginia University. He was a Navy Veteran having served as a Hospital Corpsman during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion. He worked in textile manufacturing during his career, having served as Vice President of Manufacturing for three of the larger companies in the Upholstery and Automotive Carpet Industry including Collins & Aikman and retired from Quaker Fabric Corp. to live in Roxboro and then Durham until his death.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, LaRue Burns McKinney. He was married to LaRue for 56 years. He is preceded in death by his father and stepmother, his daughter, Kimberly K. Hartwell, sister, Renelda Hunter and her husband, Joe, and his brother, Earl Caldwell. Surviving are three children who were the lights of his life, Kathy L. McKinney of Durham, John W. McKinney, Jr. (Michelle) of Chapel Hill, Connie M. Cox of Durham, and son-in-law, Russell Hartwell of Nebo, who was like a son to him. Also, surviving are three grandchildren, Jon Michael Cox, Ryan E. McKinney, and Virginia Nicole McKinney, two great-grandchildren, Brianna Cox and Wesley William McKinney and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2018 at  the Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. Julian Aldridge officiating. Interment will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
