Sym Thorpe, Jr.

OXFORD — Mr. Sym Thorpe, Jr., age 78, of 140 Caltolina Farm Road in Oxford, departed this life Tuesday, July 31, 2018 in Roxboro Nursing Center in Roxboro. He was a native of Person County and a member of New St. James Baptist Church in Timberlake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sym Thorpe, Sr. and Callie Speed Thorpe; two sisters, Flora Ledbetter and Edith Glenn; and three brothers, Mckinley Thorpe, James Thorpe and Clifton Thorpe.

He is survived by six children, Sym Levar Thorpe, III (Chrishelle) of Saint Albans, New York, Symetta Thorpe Williams of Oxford, Will (Priscilla), Melita, Cherie and Wiletta; sister-in-law, Thelma Bass Thorpe of Oxford; nine grandchildren, Sym IV, Grayson, Elias, Sterling, Avery, April, Telita, Michael and Deanna; 16 greatgrandchildren; step-sisters, step-brothers, nieces; nephews; and other additional relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be Monday, August 6, 2018 at 10 a.m. at New St. James Baptist Church 4130 Pixley- Pritchard Road, Timberlake, NC with the Rev. Lloyd Oliver, pastor, providing the eulogy and the Rev. Joyce Clayton, presiding. Burial will follow in the Thorpe Family Cemetery, 5345 Pixley Pritchard Road in Timberlake. The family will receive friends Monday at the church from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. when his body will lie in state.
