Mary Jane Hawkins Fletcher Melton

HURDLE MILLS — Mary Jane Hawkins Fletcher Melton, 80, of 1065 Hawkins Loop Rd., Hurdle Mills, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018. Born in Caswell County, Mrs. Melton was the daughter of the late Robert Baynes and Nannie Lee Whitfield Hawkins and wife of the late Bill Melton. Mrs. Melton taught for over 30 years at Halifax High School. She had attended Black Walnut Baptist Church. She was currently a member of the Christian Women’s Club. Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by her brother, James “Jimmy” Hawkins.

Mrs. Melton is survived by three children, Janis Buchanan, of Barboursville, Virginia, Wanda Fletcher-Womack, of Vernon Hill, Virginia and Donald Eugene Fletcher, of Hurdle Mills; four sisters, Rebecca Clayton, of Timberlake, Brenda Oakley, of Rougemont, Linda Bowes, of Hurdle Mills and Doris Hawkins, of Timberlake; two grandchildren, Wendy Crews and Jillian Frazier; four great-grandchildren and her special dog Penfold.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, at Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Alfred Rimmer. Burial followed in the Flat River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation was held 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Brooks & White Chapel prior to the service.

Pallbearers were Adam Crews, Billy Hawkins, Frank Frazier, Roy Gordon, Mickey Glassock, and Kevin Moore.
