“Hidden Figures” coming to local library

The Person County Public Library invites local residents to take part in the 2018 Person County Community Read of Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly to celebrate the phenomenal true story of the African-American, female mathematicians whose calculations fueled some of America’s greatest achievements in space.

Copies of the best-selling book will be available at the library starting Aug. 13. Several events will be held at the library in September, including a discussion of the book on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. and a showing of the 2016 movie adaptation on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.

Dr. Christine Darden, the first African-American woman to be promoted into the Senior Executive Service for her work in researching supersonic flight and sonic booms, will also give a lecture at the library on Sept. 22 at 2 p.m.

She was chronicled in Hidden Figures as “standing on the shoulders” of the three central women featured in the book: Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.

Darden will share how she catapulted from high school math teacher to a 40-year career with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

For those wishing to host a discussion in their book club, classroom, civic organization or church groups, discussion questions will be available at the library’s front desk.
