Autism Society to host Emeralds of Hope second-chance prom

The Person County chapter of the Autism Society of North Carolina is hosting Emeralds of Hope, a second-chance prom, on Sept. 8 from 7-11 p.m. The fundraising event will be held at Palace Pointe Amusement Center, with tickets priced $35 per couple and $20 per individual.

Local photographer Jamie Harris will take prom pictures, which will be available for purchase. Music will be provided by Two Guys and a Truss, a disc jockey and lighting company based in Bahama; and decorations will be provided by Village Gallery Florist and Gift.

“We decided to try to do something completely different than anything out there,” said chapter director Cindy Martin. “The theme is ‘Emeralds of Hope,’ because the color of the Autism Society of North Carolina is green.”

The funds from the second chance prom will go toward the chapter’s upcoming sensory-friendly events, which average two to four a month and include bowling, bounce houses, movies, swimming, skating and painting, Martin says.

“Right now, what we’re doing is trying to find as many activities as we can out of the chapter money so that we can help families across all financial capacities,” she said. “And, of course, I would love to see [Emeralds of Hope] become something that we do annually. We’re praying for a big turnout, because everyone has been so wonderful to us, as far as being able to pull together and make differences.”

Tickets for the second chance-prom are available at the Roxboro Chamber of Commerce, Specialty Design, Gypsy Rose Beauty Bar and Hurdle Mills Grocery. They’re also available online at https://bit. ly/2MvveQV.
