‘Dogs fall in season opener

KELLY SNOW | COURIER-TIMES The Roxboro Community School boys’ basketball team opened its season with a 72-54 loss to Raleigh Homeschool Tuesday at home.

The Hawks led 56-51 after the third quarter and put the game away with a 14-0 run during the first 5:35 of the fourth quarter. Mitchell McGrath buried three 3-pointers during that spurt and finished with 14 points. The Bulldogs managed just three points in the fourth quarter.

Jones gave RCS that lone basket in the final frame and finished with a teamhigh 18 points. The senior did much of his work at the free throw line, hitting 8-of- 10 for the game.

Nasir Stokes finished with 17 points with 14 coming in the first half.

Jalen Bailey chipped in eight and hit all four of his free throw attempts.

J.R. Paylor finished with five points, while Mack Warren came off the bench and added four.

Bryson Pleasant rounded out the scoring with two points.

The Bulldogs will be back in action Friday when it hosts the Roxboro Community School Veterans’ Day Tournament. They will matchup with the North Carolina School of Science and Math.

Game time is set for 8:30 p.m.
