Carolyn Oakley Davis Stewart


Carolyn Oakley Davis Stewart, 83, of 1422 Jackson St., Roxboro, died Sunday, January 12, 2020. Born in Person County, Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of the late Lowell M. and Ethel Perkins Oakley and wife of the late John Robert Davis. She was also preceded in death by her son, John Robert Davis Jr. and her brother, Wayne Oakley. Mrs. Stewart worked for Rose’s Department Store and later Walker’s Drapery. She was an active member of Ca-Vel Baptist Church where she was the first woman deacon. She also served as Sunday School teacher and WMU director. She liked to bake and sew. Her greatest loves were her God and her family.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by her husband, Paul Lewis Stewart; three daughters, Kathy Averette (Tom), of Leasburg, Anita Grinstead (Tim), of Roxboro, and Maria Lea (Donald), of Hurdle Mills; seven grandchildren, Charles Averette (Marla), Amy Newton (Terry), Brandy Young (Jimmy), Tyson Grinstead (Tiffany), Jordan Grinstead (Nichole), Brandon Lea (Hunter) and Payton Lea; six great-grandchildren, Brittany White, Aaron White, Ethan Newton, Kaiden Grinstead, Brayden Grinstead and Avery Grinstead; three brothers, L.M. Oakley, Jr., (Mary Alice) of Roxboro, John Oakley (Ramell), of Smithfield and the Rev. Phil Oakley (Beth), of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Elsie Stanford (TC)and Rosemary Sikes (Curtis), both of Durham; five step-children; eight step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Ca-Vel Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Gift, the Rev. Phil Oakley, the Rev. Don McKinney and the Rev. Richard Long. Burial will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ca-Vel Baptist Church and at other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Kurt Sikes, Chet Sikes, Tim Davis, Kenneth Davis, Dave Fowler, and Frank Shotwell.
