County contracts YMCA study

Person County’s Board of Commissioners authorized a $24,000 contract with FourSquare Research, Inc. to conduct a YMCA market study at its meeting Monday night.

The study was funded as part of the 2019-20 fiscal year budget, and the contract is under the $25,000 provided in the budget.

The contract was approved as part of the meeting’s consent agenda and did not garner any discussion from the commissioners.

This study is required by YMCA USA and serves as the first step in considering whether a community can support and sustain a YMCA facility.

This summer, the YMCA USA approved the boundary expansion for the Danville Family YMCA to study the possibility of creating a branch facility in Person County, according to County Manager Heidi York’s summary presented to the commissioners.

As part of the survey, FourSquare Research will conduct 600 telephone interviews completed with non YMCA households in the targeted area.

In its proposal to the Danville Family YMCA to conduct the study of a possible Person County branch facility, FourSquare explained that the process will provide findings with a 95 percent confidence level and a statistical error of ± 4 percent.

According to their proposal, FourSquare will be able to provide a forecast of new full pay membership units and revenue with recommended facility features, pricing and program strategies for a new full service facility and current awareness and perception of the YMCA in the study area. FourSquare’s report will also provide demographic and psychographic profiles of prospective membership makeup, including membership type, age, ethnicity, where they live and preferred service approach, as compared to those of current members and finally program interest of prospective members.

When describing its experience, FourSquare Research notes the company’s history with nonprofit organizations.

“We only work with nonprofit organizations,” the proposal reads. “Having conducted over 800 studies for YMCAs and nonprofits throughout the United States, the team at FourSquare Research, Inc. has more experience with this type of project than any other market research team in the nation.”

According to their proposal, FourSquare Research has worked with YMCAs in Greensboro, Raleigh, Charlotte, Lincolnton, Mooresville, Elizabeth City, Nags Head, Salisbury, High Point and Winston-Salem and with many in rural communities.

The study is expected to be completed in 60-90 days.
