Helen Pashales Vurnakes


DURHAM – Former owner of Jimmy’s Famous Hotdogs, Helen Pashales Vurnakes, 92, died peacefully on August 5, 2019 surrounded by family. She was born on April 3, 1927 to the late James and Maria Pashales.

Helen is survived by her three sons; Steve Vurnakes (Dianne), Jimmy Vurnakes (Frances) and Michael Vurnakes (Barbara); brother, George Pashales; sister, Edna Searcy (Bob); grandchildren, Pete, Heather, Christopher, Christina, Emily and Jeff; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Ava, Ashley, Amanda, Jeff and Lauren and many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Pete, and sisters, Jenny Pashales and Nina Pappas.

A liturgy will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 12, at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, Durham, with burial rites to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Friends are welcome to visit the Vurnakes family from 6 - 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 11, with a Trisagion service starting at 7 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Durham.
