High will speak at MLK banquet


Shady Hill Baptist Church will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance at noon, Monday.

Dr. Percy L. High will be the guest speaker. High was born in Raleigh and received his undergraduate degree from Shaw University, his Master of Divinity from Virginia Union University and his Doctor of Ministry from Southeastern Baptist Seminary. H was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Richmond, Va. Seminary.

High has served as pastor of Bethesda Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Va., First Baptist Church in Oxford and New Hope Baptist Church in Braddock, Pa.

While serving as a pastor, High was also an educator at Saint Emma Military Academy, Kittrell College, Braddock Sr. High School, Penn State University and St. Augustine’s University.

High has served as a member and on the board of directors for numerous civic and religious organizations.

After having served for more than 34 years as pastor of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Durham, High retired in 2006 and, since 2008, he has served as a visiting preacher, interim pastor, and pastor of the New Red Mountain Missionary Baptist Church in Rougemont.

From May 2016 through most of July 2017 he served as interim pastor of Martin Street Baptist Church in Raleigh.
