Janet Dunkley DeJarnette


SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — Mrs. Janet Dunkley DeJarnette of South Boston, formerly of Clover, Va. passed away Friday, Aug. 27, 2021 with her daughter, Kathy Terry by her side at the Commonwealth Assisted Living Facility in South Boston, Va.  She was born in Halifax County, Va. on July 12, 1922 and was 99 years of age.  She was the daughter of the late John Harrison Dunkley and the late Magge Elizabeth Barnes Dunkley and was married to the late Jessie Williams DeJarnette, Sr.

She was the oldest member of Ash Ave. Baptist Church, where she was a devoted Christian who displayed her faith by helping others. She was a loving mother and grandmother to all her family and friends. She had a zest for life, travel, quilting, cooking, bluegrass music, fishing and crabbing.  She was known for her green thumb, beautiful orchids, gardenias, coconut pies and fried chicken. Janet loved her children unconditionally and was known as “MeMe” to all her family.  She also helped raise many children in Halifax County after she retired from Sales Knitting.

Mrs. Janet Dunkley DeJarnette iss survived by: three daughters, Peggy D. Clayton and husband Cecil of Roxboro, Betty D. Sadler and husband James of South Boston, Va., Kathy D. Terry and the late Paul Terry of Roxboro; two grandchildren Malcolm “Chip” E. Ragans, Jr. and wife Rosemary of Halifax, Va., Rechelle Ragans Estep and husband Bob of Bistro, Va.; one step-grandchild Amanda C. Headley (Ron) of Roxboro;  seven great-grandchildren, five step-great grandchildren, one great great-step grandchild.

Special friends, the late Jim Angell and his family, Judy and Steve Furches, John Angell and children of Seaford, Va.  Host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by six sisters : Mae Dunkley, Anita Whitlow, Maggie Eudy, Minnie Moss, Belle Martin and Virginia Foster.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 1 at at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Coy Terry officiating.  Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Kathy Terry, 1079 Holly Court, Halifax, Va.
