The Person High School JV volleyball team kept its perfect record intact but it was far from easy as it held off Eastern Alamance, 2-0 (26-24, 25-20) Thursday at home.
With the win, Person moves to 3-0 on the season and has yet to drop a set — but it came dangerously close to squandering one.
The Rockets ripped off 10 consecutive points on Hannah Brann’s serve to take a seemingly comfortable 22-13 lead before the Eagles mounted a late charge.
Eastern Alamance fought off two set points and took advantage of six straight Rocket errors to tie the set at 24-24 after an ace.
Person was able to retake the lead after an Eastern Alamance serve sailed long and put the opening set away when a free ball dropped in between a host of Eagles.
It was a similar, but not quite as harrowing story in the second set.
The Rockets pulled away with a 7-0 highlighted by two aces from Jacie Kennedy and three Delaney Glover kills.
The second ace lifted Person to a 22-12 advantage, but again, the Eagles stormed back.
Eastern answered with six consecutive points, but were never closer than three. Outside hitter Karter Hawkins sealed the victory with back-to-back kills, the final one falling in the deep right corner.
Hawkins, Kennedy, Glover and Blair Nance all finished with five kills, with setter Laney Hodgin assisting on all 20 kills.
The Rockets will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Western Alamance. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
