Behind shutdown pitching, timely hits, heads-up baserunning and clean defense, Roxboro Community School’s baseball team defeated Riverside-Durham, 7-0, to move to 1-1 on the year Monday at Optimist Park.
“Offensively I was really, really pleased,” RCS head coach Ron Hodgin said. “I thought we did some really nice things with situational hitting. Every time we got a runner to third with less than two out, we got him in so that’s big.”
RCS senior pitcher Austin Lewis started on the mound and threw four innings of shutout, one-hit ball with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
In a key spot in the third inning before the Bulldogs had any runs of their own, Lewis walked the bases loaded with one out.
After forcing the next batter to lineout, Lewis faced a full count with two outs and the bases loaded. He executed and caught his man looking at strike three to end the inning without harm.
“Austin had a stretch there where the control left him a little bit,” Hodgin said. “He walked the bases loaded and that put some pressure on us defensively. He battled through that and that was big.”
RCS senior Garrett Sharer went one-for-two at the plate and drove in two runs. Seniors Bryce Thaxton and Cameron Chalk and junior James Clayton each picked up an RBI apiece.
Clayton also stole two of the Bulldogs’ seven total bases. Sharer, Carver Pleasant, Jaxon Lawson, Blake Vernon and Hayden Hester stole one base apiece.
“We had a lot of activity on the base paths tonight,” Hodgin said. “Guys had good approaches at the plate and we took some walks when we had the opportunity.”
Although RCS totaled just three hits, they were on base consistently with nine walks and three hit-by-pitches.
“We hit the ball pretty good– we hit it at them an awful lot,” Hodgin said. “Hayden Hester had a great night at the plate but I think he went 0-for because he kept hitting it at people. But he put the barrel on the ball every time.”
The Bulldogs don’t play again until Wednesday, March 15 when they’ll host Oxford Prep for their Triangle North Athletic Conference opener.
