The Person JV boys’ basketball team battled back from a 15-point third quarter deficit to put pressure on a Williams team that hasn’t lost in two full seasons.
Person’s rally ultimately fell short in its 66-64 loss Friday in its season finale. Williams’ win streak reached 37 in a row as the Rockets finished the season at 19-5 overall.
Early 3-pointers from Jakim Washington, Jashawn Graves and Tyler Wilson helped Person jump out to a 15-4 advantage, but Williams scored the next nine to make it 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Person’s lead slipped away in the second as the Bulldogs used a 13-3 run to go up by eight before some magic late in the frame.
Washington beat the buzzer with a heave from near half court that banked off the glass to send Person into halftime trailing 32-27.
Williams managed to stretch its lead to 15 with 3:20 left in the third as the Rockets teetered before rattling off nine straight to close the quarter and get back into it, entering the fourth down 49-43.
Around the five minute mark, Person’s Steve Cash nailed a contested 3-pointer to make it 53-51.
The Bulldogs came right back with a three of their own, followed by a steal and easy transition layup to quickly push their lead back to seven.
With two seconds left, Washington connected on his fifth three of the game but Williams inbounded the ball and time expired with the Bulldogs clinging to their two-point lead.
Washington led all scorers with 25 points while Malachi Harris finished with 12 and Graves contributed 10.
