Roxboro Community School’s varsity boys basketball team fell to Oxford Prep 67-54 on Monday night in Roxboro in a game that was resumed from a meeting between the teams in December.
The game was originally postponed Oxford Prep leading, 11-10, with 1:02 to in the first quarter after a severe injury to an Oxford Prep player.
After RCS senior shooting guard and captain Sam Wheeler scored eight of RCS’s 10 points in the first quarter on the game’s original start date, he picked up right where he left off and finished with a game-high 29 points.
On Monday, Wheeler scored the Bulldogs’ first points of the evening on a corner 3-pointer just before the first quarter buzzer sounded as RCS entered the second quarter down, 14-13.
Oxford Prep went up 26-20 midway through the second, but Wheeler hit 8-of-8 free throws in the frame to help RCS take a 31-30 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs led by four early in the third, but trailed 44-38 with 8.6 seconds left in the quarter. RCS junior point guard Torreono Graves brought the ball up and found junior shooting guard Collin Horner open in the lane where he calmly tossed in a floater that dropped through the basket with no time left on the clock.
Oxford Prep’s bench depth and fresh legs seemed to pay dividends in the fourth quarter as the Griffins took their first double-digit lead of the evening and didn’t look back.
Senior forward Logan Jones scored 12 of his team-high 26 in the final frame to help ice the win.

Vikings rout Bulldogs, 80-44
RCS fell Voyager Academy, 80-44 last Thursday in East Roxboro.
“I thought we played a very good first half, but when a team is getting three shots to your one, it’s very hard to compete,” RCS head coach Connor Bryant said.
Voyager used its depth to build an early lead and stretch it out as 10 Vikings recorded points in the game while the Bulldogs had just eight players available with six scoring points.
“One thing I really liked from my starters is that they handled their business early so we could get other guys in,” Voyager head coach Melvin Scott said. “Then when they’re on the bench, they’re cheering for the guys. I love watching that.”
Scott, a 2005 national champion as a North Carolina Tar Heel, commended the effort he saw from RCS.
“They’re always going to play,” Scott said. “They didn’t stop. I’m yelling ‘who’s got number four (Sam Wheeler)?’ He’s popping threes, those guys are competing. I love coming here. I love this gym and I remember the old gym— boy, those games used to be jumping.”
Voyager is tied for the conference lead with Henderson Collegiate, both with a loss and a win against each other as the regular season winds down.
RCS lost to Henderson Collegiate, 100-68, but stats were unavailable at press time.
