The Person High School women’s golf team is in the midst of its most successful season.
Kaytlin Phillips, Haley Thomas, Angela Flores and Corie Hawn, who all have six the of Central Conference’s 12 lowest stroke totals, are already slotted into regionals on Oct. 17 at Whispering Pines’ River Course.
This means the Rockets are currently slated to qualify for regionals as a team. A school needs at least three golfers to accomplish that feat.
Phillips leads the Rockets with a 52 stroke average. She is fifth in the conference with 255 total strokes.
Thomas has a 54 average and sits seventh in the conference with a 269 total stroke output. Flores is right behind Thomas with a 56 average and 274 total strokes. Hawn is holding on to 10th with an identical 56-stroke average and 277 total strokes.
“I never thought we could surpass last year, but we have already done it and the season’s not over,” Person head coach Lynn Ward said. “I’m really proud of our team.”
PHS ties Eastern for second in early-week match
Add second place to the impressive list of accolades for the Person golfers this Fall.
The Rockets, led by 48’s from Phillips and Riley Carver, carded a 148 as a team and tied Emily Matthews-led Eastern Alamance for second place at Mill Creek Golf Course Monday afternoon.
Hawn recorded a 52 to round out Person’s team score. Flores (55) and Thomas (57) rounded out unofficial scores.
Western Alamance won the match with a 138. Orange finished fourth with a 161, Northwood came in fifth at 170, while Cedar Ridge rounded out scored with a 211.
Rockets come in third Thursday
Phillips and Thomas led the Rockets in match play Thursday afternoon at Occoneechee Golf Course.
Phillips carded a career-low 48, Thomas shot a 51 and Flores registered a 53 to give Person a 152 team score. Hawn (54) and Shelby Dryman (62) rounded out unofficial scores.
Western Alamance won the match by carding a 133, while Eastern Alamance finished with a 142.
“We are really improving,” Ward said. “To already have two golfers qualify for regionals, shows how far ahead we are this year.”
More good news could be on the horizon for Person. If one more golfer qualifies for regionals, the Rockets qualify as a team.
